China sees higher online payments during Qingming holiday, RMB 3.55 trln swiped

Apr 07, 2021 (China Knowledge) - NetsUnion, China’s online payment clearinghouse, and China UnionPay, a card payment giant, reported higher payments during the 2021 Tomb-sweeping holiday as people spent on travel, catering and accommodations.

Combined remittance on the two platforms reached RMB 3.55 trln during the three-day holiday that concluded on Monday.

NetsUnion processed 4.62 bln online payment transactions worth RMB 2.65 trln during the holiday, up by 34.26% and 48.86% YoY, respectively. Both figures are record highs compared with previous Tomb-sweeping Day holidays.

China UnionPay meanwhile reported transactions worth RMB 903.6 bln, up by 3.6%.

Tomb-sweeping Day, also known as Qingming Festival, is a traditional Chinese holiday for people to pay respect to the dead and worship ancestors. It was observed on April 4 this year.
