Baidu to launch driverless robotaxis across Beijing
Apr 30, 2021 (China Knowledge) - Baidu’s (9888) driverless taxis, the Apollo Robotaxi, will be launched across Beijing from May 2. This will make Baidu the first company in China to offer self-driving taxis without a driver.
The trial test of this autonomous driving had lasted close to 6 months since October 2020. In addition, for some years now, major upgrades have been implemented to this technology, such as the inclusion of high-definition maps.
Baidu and Geely (0175) has a venture called Jidu Auto, and in the works is a USD 7.7 bln plan to make smart cars over the next 5 years.
Its immediate competition is the AutoX, backed by Alibaba (9988) that is also offering paid driverless rides to public users in Shenzhen.
