Cellular companies compete to launch first 5G phones, debut expected next year
Oct 25, 2018 (China Knowledge) - The Taiwan Electronic Times has quoted industry sources as saying that chip and mobile phone manufacturers are accelerating their pace. They are expected to release 5G mobile phones worldwide in the second quarter of next year, a quarter ahead of the industry's original schedule. Among them, the major smartphone brands will launch 5G mobile phones in the first half of 2019, and chip manufacturers such as Qualcomm have already advanced the launch of chips and platform solutions by at least one quarter.
Compared to 4G network, 5G network is characterized by high speed, low power consumption and Internet of Things (IOT) properties. It makes every chip and mobile phone manufacturer spares no effort to join the research and development ranks of the 5G commercialization.
The commercialization of 5G is bound to bring tremendous changes to the network equipment manufacturing industry, such as the birth of new functions and the promotion of equipment and their upgrading. The unlocking of new network era also means a new type of mobile service and network operators’ business model may be out of date.
Earlier this year, Qualcomm announced its 5G pilot plan in Beijing, which cooperates domestic mobile phone companies such as Lenovo, OPPO, vivo, Xiaomi and ZTE, but Huawei was not included. However, Huawei did not lag behind in its research on 5G. It is reported that Huawei's first Android folding 5G mobile phone will be launched in the middle of 2019.
Other businesses have also put the 5G commercialization on the agenda. OnePlus is increasing its investment in 5G, deepening its cooperation with Qualcomm and operators, and is expected to release 5G mobile phones in 2019. Vivo plans to complete the R&D and mass production of the first batch of NSA and SA 5G phones in 2019.
