Ford Motors and Baidu team up to test driverless vehicles in China

Nov 02, 2018 (China Knowledge) - Chinese tech giant, Baidu Inc. <BIDU:NASDAQ> has, on Tuesday, announced its partnership with Ford Motor Company <F:NYSE> to test self-driving vehicles in China, for a period of two years. The two companies aim to achieve level 4 standard, for driverless vehicles, set by the U.S. industry organization SAE International.

SAE Level 4 capable-vehicle, is one of high automation that can complete all aspects of driving without a human driver to intervene. The SAE International six levels of automation rating system is used by the U.S. Department of Transportation for classification of a vehicle’s automation capabilities, with Level 4 being referred as full automation.

Ford has been expanding its research and development in advance algorithms, 3D mapping, radar technology and camera sensors, in order to achieve the highest level of automation, compared to its competitors.

Baidu, on the other hand, is one of the leading companies in the development of driverless technology in China. Baidu, so far, has developed and produced more than 100 self-driving buses.

Besides that, the company has also developed the Apollo platform, where partners can leverage on its software to develop their own autonomous driving systems. The platform is the only open autonomous driving simulation engine in the world. Ford is one of the founding members of the Apollo alliance.

The VP and general manager of Baidu’s intelligent driving group believes that the combination of the company’s technological expertise and its understanding of China, combined with Ford’s technological advancement will accelerate Baidu’s goal of developing autonomous driving vehicles, which will benefit consumers greatly in the future.

This partnership will also benefit Ford, with China being the largest automotive market in the world. Ford can capitalize on the technological capability and the market knowledge Baidu has, of the Chinese market, to further its business and the company’s goal of achieving the production of fully autonomous vehicles by 2021.
