Nov 05, 2018 (China Knowledge) - As the first China International Import Expo (CIIE) kicked off this morning, President Xi Jinping delivered a highly-anticipated speech to the numerous attendees, reaffirming the country’s commitment to free trade and the further opening up of its economy.

In his speech, President Xi reiterated the importance of inclusive growth in the world and that China hopes to strike win-win deals with all its trade partners for mutual benefits. China has grown rapidly to become the world’s second largest economy by GDP in recent years and this has not only benefited China itself but also the world at large as more Chinese investors and companies expanded worldwide bringing their investments and technologies to various other countries.

China will also continue to further open its economy after multiple moves in recent times to make its financial markets more accessible to foreign investors such as relaxing capital flow rules and issuing local fund management licenses to global managers.

The CIIE comes just after the Canton Import and Export Fair which is the world’s largest tradeshow. However, the CIIE differs starkly from the Canton Fair in that it is the first fair where China is putting the emphasis on the import side of things, showing China’s position not only as an exporter but also an importer.

The CIIE is set to see more than 2,800 companies including more than 200 companies from the Fortune 500 list. In addition, there will also be more then 360 delegates from 172 countries and regions attending the event.
