Nov 13, 2018 (China Knowledge) - WeChat and Alipay have been named the official payment providers for Duty Free Philippines. The memorandum of agreement will be subsequently signed tomorrow at the headquarters of Duty Free Philippines in Manila.

Duty Free Philippines aims to augment service facilities for tourists, allowing the generation of foreign exchange and revenue for the government. It is currently managed by the Philippine Tourism Authority.

WeChat Pay and Alipay are the two top used mobile payment application platforms in China. Both companies have been aggressively expanding their presences overseas.

China and the Philippines have been stepping up with their cooperation in many areas recently. Chinese President Xi Jinping is slated to visit the Philippines later this month where issues such as development aid and progress on joint undersea fuel exploration will be discussed.

Just last week, a consortium consisting of China Telecom has managed to gain license to be the third telecommunication providers in a market controlled tightly by the Philippines government previously. The country's President Rodrigo Duterte has expressed his confidence in the quality of electronic products produced by Chinese firms and has welcomed the entry of China Telecom into the Philippines.
