China applied for more patents in AI than U.S. and Japan in 2018
Nov 15, 2018 (China Knowledge) - China Patent Protection Association has issued the Patent Deep Analysis Report of AI Technology, presenting global and local patent application data. The report shows that China has obvious advantages in the total number of patent applications, but there are still some gaps in high-quality and high-value patents between China, the U.S. and Japan.
According to the Derwent World Patents Index (DWPI) database, the number of patent applications in the field of AI is on the rise year by year worldwide. After 2010, the growth rate has been significantly accelerated, and the growth rate in the past two years has also been increasing.
China is leading the world with most patent applications, followed by the U.S. and Japan. At present, China has applied for 76,876 patents in the field of AI, the U.S., 67,276 applications are slightly lower than China, and Japan ranked third. Compared to the global trend of change, the annual growth rate of patent applications in China has been higher in the past decade, especially in the last two years. The R&D in AI in China has also played a catalytic role in the growth of the total number of patent applications.
