IKEA teams up with Xiaomi to tackle China’s smart devices market
Nov 28, 2018 (China Knowledge) - Smartphone and appliance maker, Xiaomi, has entered a partnership with Swedish furniture giants Ikea to produce smart lighting devices. The new partnership falls in line with Xiaomi's strategy of software and hardware integration as its next pillar of growth.
The lighting products produced through the collaboration will be able to be controlled through smart speakers such as Xiaomi's voice assistant Xiao AI which is currently only available in the Chinese language.
The products will be initially targeted at the mainland Chinese market before the companies set their sights on other overseas opportunities as a natural progression.
The partnership comes amid Ikea looks to restructure its China operations to enhance its digital capabilities to keep up with a rapidly changing Chinese market. Ikea represents an important market for the Swedish furniture giants and it will be looking to open more brick-and-mortar stores in China.
Apart from new stores, the company has also recently established an online presence through the launch of its first online pop-up shop using a mini-program on popular messaging app WeChat.
Xiaomi which went public this year is one of China's leading smartphone and internet of things (IoT) company. For the third quarter this year, the company reported that it has connected more than 132 million IoT devices, excluding smartphones and laptops.
