China’s 5G smartphone shipments up 400% MoM amidst weakening market
Nov 20, 2019 (China Knowledge) - According to a report by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, a scientific research institute under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, total shipments of 5G smartphones in China stood at 2.49 mln in Oct, up by more than 400% MoM compared to the 497,000 total shipments of 5G smartphones in September.
China’s total mobile phone shipments in Oct was around 35.97 mln, a fall of 0.7% as compared to Sep and down 6.7% YoY. Over the past 10 months, China's total mobile phone shipments reached 323 mln, of which 3.28 mln units were 5G smartphones.
The growth of 5G smartphones, despite a fall in overall mobile phone shipments, brings optimism for smartphones manufacturers such as Huawei, Samsung, Xiaomi and Vivo. Experts estimate China’s total 5G smartphone’s supply to reach 100 mln by 2020, and the global shipments coming in at around 200 to 300 mln.
Recently, China officially kickstarted 5G commercialization, which has since reached 50 cities last month. China’s big-three telecommunications companies of China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom have begun to introduce 5G mobile plans to users. Smartphone manufacturers are also releasing more 5G compatible smartphone models, which has aided the rapid growth of 5G within China.
The 5G smartphone market in China is expected to experience rapid growth, while at the same time become increasingly competitive.
